A week and a half later I am finally getting a few minutes to post the whole story of Easton's birth. The last 10 days have flown by and when people ask what we have been doing I have to stop and think.....feeding, changing diapers, and sleeping. We have been able to go for a few short walks around the neighborhood now that I am feeling a little better but they are short. So here is how the story goes.
October 28th I had contractions off and on all day but was still able to make it to Costco and the grocery store. I had to stop a few times because the contractions were a little uncomfortable. Tried to go to sleep that night and got a couple of hours of shut eye.
12:00 midnight on October 29th.........Happy Birthday to me contractions start getting uncomfortable and they wake me up.
1:30 I wake Larry up from his deep sleep with the TV on trying to get my mind off of them. We start to time the contractions.
3:30 Contractions have been about 5 minutes apart for 2 and a half hours. I eat a bowl of cereal and a banana muffin before we head out to the hospital.
4:00 Arrive at the hospital and go to triage. I am 3 cm dilated and they have me walk the halls for 40 minutes to see if I dilate any more. At 4:45 they check me again and I have not really made any changes but they decide to admit me anyway. I would have flipped if they sent me home.
I get to my labor/delivery room where they have me walking the halls to try to speed things up. I felt like a zombie walking around, stopping every few minutes when the contractions hit.
7:00 am. Dr. Linnerson comes in to check me. I am at 4 cm so he breaks my water. I get an IV put in for extra fluids.
I got checked every two hours. At around 10:30 the contractions were starting to get unbearable so after some tears I decide it is time for the epidural. I was not happy getting the shot into my back because I was already upset about the pain from the contractions. All I remember is saying "I am never doing this again!".
Ahhh Relief........After the epidural both Larry and I were able to get some sleep as I was totally numb from the waist down. Modern medicine is great! I can't imagine women who do this without drugs!
5:30 pm The nurse checks me again and lets me know that I am fully dilated and that it was time to push. My nurse, Liz, who had been with me from 6:00 that morning was going off shift at 6:00 pm and I would have a new nurse come in. She decided to stick around because she wanted to see little Easton be born.
8:01 pm. After 2 and a half hours of pushing Easton finally decided to greet us with his chord wrapped around his neck. Daddy and I were both in tears when he finally came out and daddy stayed with him by the nurse station as they got him breathing well and crying. I kept trying to look over the doctor's shoulder to see what they were doing with him.
Around 11 they moved us all to our postpardum room upstairs for recovery. I felt like I had been hit by a truck! I will say that I think the recovery has been almost worse than the delivery.
A week and a half later we have been pee'd on almost a dozen times during diaper changes and spend a lot of time feeding in the nursery. Breastfeeding has been a bit of a challenge but we are determined to get it down. We have been getting about 2-3 hour blocks of sleep throughout the night between feedings and diaper changes. Overall Easton is a very happy baby except for when he is hungry! He lets us know. It is hard to tell who he looks like so far but we think he is a great mix of the both of us!
